The Flood Lights of Truth vs. the Flashlight of Truth
Very interesting dialogue from 1985. Steve Daily, the pastor of Celebration Center,
has been writing a two volume set of books on early Adventist history that has
been pretty much swept under the rug. He's finished the ten chapters for the
first volume and is in the process of writing the chapters for the second volume.
As he completes each chapter -- about one each month -- he shares this with a
group of interested individuals on Sabbath afternoon. He reads his chapter to
us (we each have a copy) and then we discuss the implications of the information
presented. Steve gets much of his material from the Heritage Room, the Ellen
White Estate here at the LLU library. Because of her propensity to copying from
other Christian writers without giving credit to them and other very human character
traits, I've come to see Ellen White at marginal. She certainly is not authoritative.
I'm far more interested in learning about the text of scripture through the eyes
of the author of scripture than from someone who relied mainly on Sunday keeping
writers as her source of inspiration.
She lamented the fact that people weren't reading the Bible much and said she
was the lesser light to lead people to the greater light. If one is lost in the
forest or desert at night and all one has as a guide is a simple flashlight,
that will be an important tool to aid one in keeping on the path toward the rescue
station. But once one comes into the bright flood lights of the rescue station,
the light from the flashlight is not noticable any more. Those Adventists who
use Ellen White as an infallible interpreter of scripture want to recognize the
flashlight as though it is more powerful than the flood lights of scripture.
Once we study scripture seriously and make the many connections between and among
the various authoris of scripture, we don't need Ellen White any more. I don't
need Ellen White to prove any point of scripture.
Thanks for the video clips.
