Was Ellen White REALLY an Inspired Messenger from the Lord?
Ellen White was NOT an Inspired person or as some call her, a prophet of God! Deuteronomy 18:22 and Jeremiah 23:32-39 makes this perfectly clear. Christ could not have made this teaching any plainer than He did in Matthew 7:21-23.
Deuteronomy 18:22 - When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
Jeremiah 23:32-39 - Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.
33 And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD.
34 And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house.
35 Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
36 And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man's word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.
37 Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath the LORD answered thee? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
38 But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD;
39 Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence:
Matthew 7:21-23 - 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Based on the Bible and a "thus saith the Lord", a True prophet does not ever make a wrong or false prediction if it is from God. God’s words could not be any stronger! That should be well established in our minds. It only takes ONE false prediction, not the dozen that are shown below!
Ellen White made many, many false predictions. A few of them are listed here:
1. June, 1845 -- Predicted the return of Christ.
"During the year 1845 I met Miss Ellen G. Harmon several times at my uncle's house in South Windham, ME. The first of these meetings was in the month of May, when I heard her declare that God had revealed to her that Jesus Christ would return to this earth in June, the next month." (Lucinda Burdick, notarized letter, published in Limboline)
2. September, 1845 – Predicted the return of Christ, again.
"During the haying season I again met her in company with James White at the same place, and heard my uncle ask her about the failure of the Lord to appear in June according to her visions. She replied that she had been told in the language of Canaan which she did not understand; but that she had since come to understand that Christ would return in September, at the second growth of grass instead of the first." (Ibid.)
3. 1846 -- Predicted that the Whites (James & Ellen) would be arrested and thrown in prison.
"Once, when on their way to the eastern part of Maine, she saw that they would have great trouble with the wicked, be put in prison, etc. This they told in the churches as they passed through. When they came back, they said they had a glorious time. Friends asked if they had seen any trouble with the wicked, or prisons? They replied, 'None at all.' People in all the churches soon began to get their eyes open, and came out decidedly against her visions" (Ibid.)
4. Great Pestilence would come.
"What we have seen and heard of the pestilence [of 1849], is but the beginning of what we shall see and hear. Soon the dead and dying will be all around us." (Present Truth, Sept. 1849)
5. 1850 – Christ to come in very near future.
"My accompanying angel said, 'Time is almost finished. Get ready, get ready, get ready.' . . . now time is almost finished. . . and what we have been years learning, they will have to learn in a few months." [Early Writings, pp. 64-67]
6. 1856 – Some present to see Jesus come.
"I was shown the company present at the Conference. Said the angel: 'Some food for worms, some subjects of the seven last plagues, some will be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus.'" [Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 131]
7. Earth to soon be depopulated.
"The human family was presented before me, enfeebled. Every generation has been growing weaker, and disease of every form visits the human race.... Satan's power upon the human family increases. If the Lord should not soon come and destroy his power, the earth would soon be depopulated." [Testimony #8, p.94, in Spiritual Gifts III-IV]
8. Slavery to come back in the South.
"Slavery will again be revived in the Southern States; for the spirit of slavery still lives. Therefore it will not do for those who labor among the colored people to preach the truth as boldly and openly as they would be free to do in other places. Even Christ clothed His lessons in figures and parables to avoid the opposition of the Pharisees." [Spalding & Magan Collection, p. 21 and 2MR #153, p. 300]
9. Slave Owners to suffer 7 Last Plagues.
"I saw that the slave master will have to answer for the soul of his slave whom he has kept in ignorance...the master must endure the seven last plagues and then come up in the second resurrection and suffer the second, most awful death." [Early Writings, p. 276]
Obviously, by the early 1900s all slave owners were now deceased, Christ’s Second Coming is still in the future and of course the Seven Last Plagues are also in the future!
10. Sick man to be healed (C. Carlstedt, died one week later).
"Present with his restoring power, to raise Carlstedt, whose sickness was not unto death, but to the glory of the Son of God." (Charles Lee, Three Important Questions for Seventh-Day Adventists to Consider)
11. Spiritualistic rappings will increase.
"I saw that soon it would be considered blasphemy to speak against the rapping, and that it would spread more and more, that Satan's power would increase and some of his devoted followers would have power to work miracles and even to bring down fire from heaven in the sight of men." [Early Writings, p. 59]
12.Earthquake to destroy San Francisco and Oakland, California.
"San Francisco and Oakland are becoming as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the Lord will visit them. Not far hence they will suffer under His judgments." [Ms 30, 1903]
This prediction, made in 1903. Oddly enough Oakland was NOT seriously damaged
and even though Mrs. White lived in Northern California, near both SF and
Oakland, she made no attempts at warning them prior to the 1906 quake.
[some of these examples were taken from http://nonegw.org/egw35.shtml]
If we give her the benefit of the doubt for the SF earthquake prediction, that is still LESS than a 10% prediction accuracy rate!! But the false predictions do not end there...
13. That Old Jerusalem would never again be built up.
"Then I was pointed to some who are in the great error of believing that it is their duty to go to Old Jerusalem, and think they have a work to do there before the Lord comes. Such a view is calculated to take the mind and interest from the present work of the Lord, under the message of the third angel; for those who think that they are yet to go to Jerusalem will have their minds there, and their means will be withheld from the cause of present truth to get themselves and others there. I saw that such a mission would accomplish no real good, that it would take a long while to make a very few of the Jews believe even in the first advent of Christ, much more to believe in His second advent. I saw that Satan had greatly deceived some in this thing and that souls all around them in this land could be helped by them and led to keep the commandments of God, but they were leaving them to perish. I also saw that Old Jerusalem never would be built up; and that Satan was doing his utmost to lead the minds of the children of the Lord into these things now, in the gathering time, to keep [p. 76] them from throwing their whole interest into the present work of the Lord, and to cause them to neglect the necessary preparation for the day of the Lord." [Early Writings 75.2]
14. That she (Ellen White) would be among those that would see Christ come and be taken up to meet the Lord at His Second Coming.
"Soon our eyes were drawn to the east, for a small black cloud had appeared, about half as large as a man's hand, which we all knew was the sign of the Son of man. We all in solemn silence gazed on the cloud as it drew nearer and became lighter, glorious, and still more glorious, till it was a great white cloud. The bottom appeared like fire; a rainbow was over the cloud, while around it were ten thousand angels, [p. 16] singing a most lovely song; and upon it sat the Son of man. His hair was white and curly and lay on His shoulders; and upon His head were many crowns. His feet had the appearance of fire; in His right hand was a sharp sickle; in His left, a silver trumpet. His eyes were as a flame of fire, which searched His children through and through. Then all faces gathered paleness, and those that God had rejected gathered blackness. Then we all cried out, "Who shall be able to stand? Is my robe spotless?" Then the angels ceased to sing, and there was some time of awful silence, when Jesus spoke: "Those who have clean hands and pure hearts shall be able to stand; My grace is sufficient for you." At this our faces lighted up, and joy filled every heart. And the angels struck a note higher and sang again, while the cloud drew still nearer the earth." [Early Writings 15.2]
15. That Christ would soon return...that time was almost finished ...in the 1850s.
" As I saw what we must be in order to inherit glory, and then saw how much Jesus had suffered to obtain for us so rich an inheritance, I prayed that we might be baptized into Christ's sufferings, that we might not shrink at trials, but bear them with patience and joy, knowing what Jesus had suffered that we through His poverty and sufferings might be made rich. Said the angel, "Deny self; ye must step fast." Some of us have had time to get the truth and to advance step by step, and every step we have taken has given us strength to take the next. But now time is almost finished, and what we have been years learning, they will have to learn in a few months. They will also have much to unlearn and much to learn again. Those who would not receive the mark of the beast and his image when the decree goes forth, must have decision now to say, Nay, we will not regard the institution of the beast." [Early Writings 67.2]
16. The downfall of the USA in a great war with England. – 1862
"Said the angel: "Hear, O heavens, the cry of the oppressed, and reward the oppressors double according to their deeds." This nation will yet be humbled into the dust. England is studying whether it is best to take advantage of the present weak condition of our nation, and venture to make war upon her. She is weighing the matter, and trying to sound other nations. She fears, if she should commence war abroad, that she would be weak at home, and that other nations would take advantage of her weakness. Other nations are making quiet yet active preparations for war, and are hoping that England will make war with our nation, for then they would improve the opportunity to be revenged on her for the advantage she has taken of them in the past and the injustice done them. A portion of the queen's subjects are waiting a favorable opportunity to break their yoke; but if England thinks it will pay, she will not hesitate a moment to improve her opportunities to exercise her power and humble our nation. When England does declare war, all nations will have an interest of their own to serve, and there will be general war, general confusion. England is acquainted with the diversity of feeling among those who are seeking to quell the rebellion. She well knows the perplexed condition of our Government; she has looked with astonishment at the prosecution of this war--the slow, inefficient moves, the inactivity of our armies, and the ruinous expenses of our nation. The weakness of our Government is fully open before other nations, and they now conclude that it is because it was not a monarchial government, and they admire their own government, and look down, some with pity, others [p. 260] with contempt, upon our nation, which they have regarded as the most powerful upon the globe. Had our nation remained united it would have had strength, but divided it must fall." [1T 259.1]
17. A general statement of who would be saved and who would be lost. – May 1856
"I was shown the company present at the Conference. Said the angel: "Some food for worms, [SISTER CLARISSA M. BONFOEY, WHO FELL ASLEEP IN Jesus ONLY THREE DAYS AFTER THIS VISION WAS GIVEN, WAS PRESENT IN USUAL HEALTH, AND WAS DEEPLY IMPRESSED THAT SHE WAS ONE WHO WOULD GO INTO THE GRAVE, AND STATED HER CONVICTIONS TO OTHERS.] some subjects of the seven last plagues, some will be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus." [1T 131.3] [Italics emphasis added to quotes]
I’ll stop with the above examples, noting that there are many more failed predictions that I have not mentioned, like the golden passes required of angels to enter heaven, that she was given wings by which she traveled to other planets in our solar system to see very tall men in these planets, she saw and spoke with Enoch on one of these sourjourns; she also discusses the amalgamation of men and beasts in existence today .... Please note in how many of these instances she uses the expressions "I saw" or "I was shown".
I hope you will see that these are NOT supposed allegations but actual predictions that she made and which never took place. It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to see that she was NOT an Inspired person by even the broadest or slimiest of terms. Please do take the time to read the message that I sent out to a number of individuals last month. I have posted an edited version of it at: http://www.a4t.org/Letters/bob-perilous_times.html.
I also cover well the premise or veracity that Christ was indeed the very Son of God and NOT equal to Him except in the way God Himself deemed Him to be, as our Savior. BUT, aside from that, my major effort was in showing by what scant means Ellen White's ''Desire of Ages'' departs from Scripture in telling the story of Christ's death and resurrection. To consider her writings as the Spirit of Prophecy is blasphemy of the highest order!
A most interesting link
is the debate between Dr. William Johnson, Editor of the Review and
Dr. Walter Martin, an Evangelical theologian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjikgrGN8DU&feature=PlayList&p=075879A54F3637B9&index=1&playnext=2&playnext_from=PL
Before I forget, I do wish to emphasize that God does reveal His secrets even today, as Joel 2:28,29 tells us. Do read the prediction that this brother in Nigeria makes and since it is set to take place in a few short months, compare them with any of Ellen White's predictions in it's specificity and timing. http://www.a4t.org/Sermons/Misc/dauda-second_angels_message.html
The angel that came to show John the End Time events, specifically said that only Jesus could be the Spirit of Prophecy. That does that live and have His Spirit of Prophecy will be worthy of Salvation. There is a BIG difference between being and having the Spirit of Prophecy as described in Revelation 12:17 & 19:10! Let us all be honest in Who and What we say the SOP is.
Let's keep our eyes on Jesus, ALONE!
Many will be lost because to avoid being deceived they preferred to believe a lie.
There was a valid reason for Christ's warning in Matthew 24:24. As Seventh-day Adventists, we are more susceptible today to be deceived than when Christ spoke those words, nearly 2000 years ago. You are FREE to believe me or not, to follow your beliefs, but never forget that you were warned and God will someday judge us by what we knew and what we rejected.
Truth is not a slam dunk that once you have it, it can never be taken from you. It is a continuing cycle with New things to learn and digest every time we open His Book.
May God provide you with wisdom and discernment,
Bob De La Torre
