John 12 - Part II
Jesus’ Last Entry into Jerusalem

Jesus arrived at Jerusalem from Jericho (Luke 19:1) six days before the third Passover (John 12:1) of his ministry. He lodged in Bethany (Matthew 21:17), going back and forth into the city teaching. John only mentions the anointing by Mary two days before Passover (Mark 14:1-3), which Jesus said was a sign for the day of my burial. The next day he entered Jerusalem for the last time, and became the Passover Lamb (1Corinthians 5:7) for the whole world.

Read John 12:12-16: (if what happen to Israel are examples to teach us (1Corinthians 10:6, 11), then the things that happened to Jesus are also types to teach us - objective: be w/o blemish: Jesus: 1Peter 1:19; his church: Ephesians 5:27)
1. Verses 14-15: What is significant about Jesus choosing to ride a donkey into Jerusalem? The prophecy - Genesis 49:9-12; Zechariah 9:9; the type - Job 11:12 {vain - empty of God’s understanding, Jerusalem at the time}

2. Verse 16: When did the disciples come to understand this event?
{the disciples understood very little of the teachings of Jesus before the cross. After the cross, after the power of the Holy Spirit came upon them, Acts 2:1-4, in Jerusalem (traditionally called city of peace). Before the cross, their expectations were the same as the people - And as they heard these things, He added and spoke a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God was about to appear immediately, Luke 19:11 MKJV. See also Luke 18:31-34; John 2:22; Acts 1:6.}

3. Verses 12-13: What is the spiritual lesson can be learned from the people meeting Jesus with palm branches?

*Psalm 1:1-3: Trees represent the character traits of people
*Deuteronomy 34:3: The name Jericho h3405 means city of the moon, Gesenius, pg 367b, and is called city of palms
*Jeremiah 31:35: ordinances of the moon - i.e. the moon a symbol for the law (no light of its own, rules the darkness, Genesis 1:14-19). Waving palms indicative of being under the law (cp Revelation 7:9 great multitude in last generation)
*Galatians 4:22-26: a city is a mind-set: old (earthly) Jerusalem, a type for the letter of the law; new (heavenly) Jerusalem, a type for the Holy Spirit, which gives us spiritual birth, Galatians 4:29; 1Peter 1:23 NIV
*Jericho was the first city destroyed upon entering the promised land; the manna, bread of the wilderness ceased, & they ate the produce of the land and unleavened bread, Joshua 5:10-12 NIV - a spiritual type
*Hebrews 7:11-12: 11 Therefore if perfection were by the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the Law), what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron?12 For the priesthood being [transferred g3346] (verse 11), it became necessary also to [translate g3331] the law - [Thayer 405a, 406b, cf Hebrews 11:5] - this rendering is justified by the teachings of Jesus, cp Matthew 5:17-18, 27-28, 31-43; 6:19-24; 7:1-5,13-20, when he put the law inward - i.e. made it spiritual, Romans 7:6, 14.

The people who met Jesus were under the law and expecting the wrong kind of Messiah. The law was to be understood spiritually after the cross; Rahab the harlot, who received the two spies (witnesses), & her family were all that were saved our of Jericho. She represents a person who, being governed by the law, comes to Jesus, and begins to see the spiritual law, cf Romans 7:5; 8:9; Galatians 5:18. The rise in elevation from Jericho to Jerusalem is nearly 3000 feet, another spiritual type - moving from the letter of the law, or man’s understanding of it, to God’s way of understanding it.}

4. Verses 17-19: Who were the main ones calling attention to Jesus & how did that affect church leaders?
{Will modern church leaders believe the witness of their own constituency who will do greater works than that recorded of Jesus, John 14:12?}
