John 6 - Part III
Labor not for Food that Perishes

In the Part II study of John chapter 6, we looked at the disciple’s experience of Jesus walking on water to save them, as an allegory of our spiritual experience. In this study we consider those who were sent away and the reason. Matthew 14: 22. And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. “Get into a ship and go before me.” Be in the mind-set of Jesus and give the gospel to the worldly (Matthew 28:19-20). Jesus instructed the disciples to get in the ship, which they did, but he sent the multitude away. John 6:14-15: 14. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. 15. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. The reason Jesus sent the people away was that he perceived that they were trying to make him their king based on the breaking of the bread, that is, the symbol instead of the spiritual meaning of the symbol. How do churches today focus the symbol rather than what the symbol teaches? Baptisms, laying on of hands, judgment, resurrection of the dead, and these are foundational things - milk (Hebrews 5:11-14; 6:1-2). They talk about the symbol but do not teach the spiritual application of it.

After the multitude discovered that Jesus was not with them anymore, they crossed the sea in other boats. John 6:22-24: 22. The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; 23. (But, there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:) 24. When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. The word Tiberias means “river god” and is indicative of where the people were in their understanding, in this case an earthly stream of thought (Proverbs 18:4). Noah was saved by the boat the Lord instructed him to build. All others were lost. There is only one boat that will save us today - the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5).

After the multitude crossed the sea in other boats, they searched for Jesus: John 6:25-26: 25. And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi [teacher], when came thou hither? 26. Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles (g4592), but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. The Greek word semeion (g4592) is translated sign 50 of 77 times. Again, the people focused on the sign of the breaking of bread, and not the spiritual bread that Jesus gave as he taught them, i.e. they did not understand the sign, or the parable of which Jesus was acting out. This lesson can be related to those who read the Bible and take the letter over the spiritual understanding of it.

Jesus told the multitude: John 6:27-30: 27. Labor not for the [food] which perishes, but for that [food] which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 28. Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29. Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. 30. They said therefore unto him, What sign show thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? Jesus had just told the crowd that they did not understand the sign of the bread, and now they ask for another sign. He told them to believe on him (Jesus) whom he (the Father) hath sent. Do the churches today correctly believe on the Son of God?

Matthew 12:39-40: ...An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah: 40. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Metaphorically, this statement applies to Jesus and humanity. Jesus was a man, tempted in all points as are we (Hebrews 4:15), and was fully enlightened as to his real Father at his baptism (Mark 1:9-11). Jesus will be in the hearts of mankind for the first three days of their creation. Day 4 is a major decision time: it is when the correct understanding of the Father, Son and the law is given. Will the multitude accept that Jesus is the literal Son of God? Will they accept that as the Son, he had a beginning, and that he is not equal to the Father in knowledge and power? Will they enter into the understanding of the spiritual law applying to the inward man? (refer to Part II for drawing of creation week)

This decision time can also be seen in the 4th church - Thyatira: Revelation 2:18-21: 18. And unto the [messenger] of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; 19. I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. 20. Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou suffer that woman Jezebel, which calls herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. 21. And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. In history Jezebel, a Baal priestess, who was married to Ahab, the king of Israel (1Kings 16-30-31). Jezebel killed all of the Lords prophets (1Kings 18:4) and brought Baal worship into Israel. One of the rites of Baal worship was to sacrifice one’s children (Psalms 106:34-39). Baal worship is a type for self worship, and a type for the modern church. People are led to kill the thoughts (children) of God and adopt a worldly way of thinking. Many who reach Thyatira are letting Jezebel teach them error, including a false understanding of the Father and Son. We are talking about the modern day church, who have been given time to repent, but do not. In my own lifetime, I know of two denominations who have given up the correct understanding of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and adopted Babylon’s version.

To ALL seven churches Jesus said, he that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. He explains to Thyatira that HE is that spirit speaking to the churches, and he leaves no doubt as to who is speaking: Revelation 2:26-29: 26. And he that overcomes, and keeps my works (John 10:25) unto the end, to him will I give [authority] over the nations: 27. And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father (John 3:34). 28. And I will give him the morning star (Revelation 22:16). 29. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. The multitude did not have ears to hear. Can you see these things in our generation? For what signs are the people seeking today? Should we not labor for the food that leads to eternal life, as the worldly are focused on that which leads to death?

All need to evaluate their relationship with Jesus Christ and be prepared to give the testimony of Jesus and learn to manifest to others the same love that he has shown to us, and which only comes by a correct understanding of the cross. And the foundation is Jesus Christ. Amen.
