John 8 - Part II
Light of Life

Updated

Read John 8:12
I stand amazed at the depth of the written word God has left for mankind, to lead them into truth. The beginner can read this verse and understand every person in the world wanting truth will get it from Jesus. Yet, more depth can be gleaned by searching out the riddles, or dark sayings (Psalms 78:1-4).

1. Considering “light of the world” as inward, can the sun, moon, stars, trees, land, water, etc. teach us spiritual lessons? Malachi 4:2 + 2 Corinthians 4:3-7; Revelation 10:1; Psalms 1:1-3

1a. How does scripture define “light of life?” Light: Psalms 119:105, 130; life: John 6:63; 5:24.

1b. How is Jesus the light of the world? John 9:5; Matthew 5:14-16 (parable - Mark 13:32-37 servants left in charge)

1c. Metaphorically, what does “darkness” represent? Proverbs 4:19; Psalms 82:4-5; 107:10-16; Job 18:5-6

Idiom: You cannot see the forest for the trees. i.e. when in the forest all one can see is trees. It is not until we get out away from the forest that we can see it in its entirety. Spiritual darkness is much the same way. Until God shines the light of truth on the errors we are believing, we do not even realize we are in darkness. One of the reasons Jesus became a man is because God has ordained that light will come via a human being (Ephesians 3:11-13). Jesus, as the Son of man, was a light to all those with whom he came in contact while on the earth, and now, as a light from the right hand of the Father, he gives understanding to his servants and we are to tell others.

Read John 8:13-20:
2. What was blocking the understanding of the Jews? Hint: verse 15; Romans 8:3-8
{What Jesus told the Pharisees was spiritual and they refused to go there, - i.e. The flesh represents man’s way of thinking, which is earthly, or worldly; Jesus was heavenly in his understanding - i.e. not of the world’s way of thinking.}

Read John 8:21-24:
3. What did Jesus mean, Where I go you cannot come? Verses 21 & 23
{their thinking was earthly, his was heavenly. They were refusing to even try and understand what Jesus was saying. Cf John 3:12. Verse 24: If you believe not that I am [the light of the world] (verse 12) you shall die in your sins.}

Read John 8:25-30:
To the Jews question, Who are you?, Jesus answered, When you have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know that I am [he light of the world (verse 12)].
4.What did Jesus mean, When you have lifted up the Son of man? John 3:14; 12:32-33 (literal & spiritual)

{The cross is a revelation of two major things: 1) the love of the Father & Son for all humanity; 2) our human nature as depicted in type by what was done to Jesus (stripes, crown of thorns, naked, darkness, etc). It is evident from scripture that God has always desired us, and His plan is to bring us to perfection - in His image.}

Psalms 91:9-13: 9 If you say, "The LORD is my refuge," and you make the Most High your dwelling, 10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels {messengers} concerning you to guard you in all your ways; 12 they will lift you up in their hands {works}, so that you will not strike your foot {direction of the thoughts} against a stone {false concept}. 13 You will tread on {overcome} the lion {pride} and the cobra {adversarial nature}; you will trample the great lion and the serpent (NIV See Revelations 13:1-2). {interpretation of symbols}
