Hebrews, Chapter 6

Impossible for God to Lie

From chapter 5 can be seen that the majority of the Jews had apparently become lazy in their search for, and growth in the truth. As Paul expressed it, they had need of being taught the beginning principles of Christ. It seems that the same concept applies to believers today. There seems to be very little independent Bible study.

Read Hebrews 6:1-8:

1. To whom is the warning concerning falling away? Verse 4; 2Pt 2:20-22
{Peter mention the proverb, likening falling away of those knowing truth to a dog turning again to his vomit - i.e. leaving truth & going back to the old errors. In my lifetime I have witnessed two religious organizations forsake the truth of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit, & adopt a false teaching of the Godhead. Today, there are at least 8 versions of the teachings about Jesus & concerning the Messiah.}

2. What is the point of the contrast contained in figurative language? Verses 7, 8; Isa 55:10-11; Mk 4:7, 18-19 {Verse 7: Earth here is the tillable areas where seed can be planted; a description of those whose receive the word of God, & are blessed by it. Verse 8: Describes those who neglect study of the Bible, & cares of the world govern their lives. Briars, thorns, thistles are symbols of that results from a self-ruled person, cf Gen 3:17-18.}

Read Hebrews 6:9-12:

3. After laying out their current condition, what does Paul say to encourage the people?
{1. Tells them that they are persuaded of better thing concerning them; 2. God has not forgotten their work & labor of love in their ministry to believers; 3. To show the same diligence, as before, to their completion; 4. Be not lazy but imitators of them who through faith & patience inherit the promises.}

Read Hebrews 6:13-20:

4. There are three things God promised Abraham after telling him to leave his father’s house - a new land; a son; and seed as numerous as the stars, Gen 12:1-3; 15:1-7; 22:16-18. How are we to understand the spiritual application today? Gal 3:13-14, 22
{Our ‘old land’ is the same as the ‘old man,’ Eph 4:22-24, those things we learned in our worldly experience, cp Mk 4:1-20; the ‘new land’ or ‘promised land’ is a type of God’s understanding being given to us through Christ, Isa 55:7-11; the son/seed the resulting thoughts, Ps 127:3-5 or new way of thinking without sin. They are as numerous as the stars, infinite in number, because we will be learning forever. See also Eze 36:24-28; Lk 11:2; Gal 4:19; Rv 12:1-2, 5.}

5. To what do the two immutable (unchangeable) things refer? Verse17-18
{Both the promise & oath were discussed under question 4: Abraham, father of our faith, Rom 4:11-16, was a type depicting the promised Messiah, Gal 3:13-14; 4:3-6.}

6. What is meant by - an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife? Example: Gen 31:26-27, 36, 44, 51-52, 55 (Gen 22:16)
{Once Laban & Jacob reached an agreement & each swore an oath, everything was peaceful between them. God has promised & gave an oath that we can be blessed via Abraham’s seed, which is Christ, Gal 3:16; so that we might receive the promises (mentioned in 4). Pentecost was a type of the fulfillment, Act 2:2-4, 33, and also stated as receiving the Spirit through the faith of Christ, Gal 3:14, 22. When the way God thinks is received - His spirit, all strife against God & mankind, will cease from our hearts. The oath to Abraham includes all his spiritual seed - Jew & Gentile alike, Gal 3:27-29; Rom 9:6-8.}

7. How are we to understand fleeing for refuge to lay hold of the hope which is within the veil? Heb 10:19-20; Eze 36:26-28
{The veil in the temple is a figure of darkness that covers the heart of man, 2Cor 3:15-17, concerning understanding of God, & physically ripped when Jesus died on the cross, Mk 15:37-38, a type representing the way of removing the veil on the heart. The heart of flesh we are to have is Christ’s, a new & living way he has consecrated for us.}
