John 4, Part II
A Nobleman with a Sick Child


John 4:43-44: 43. Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee. 44. For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country. Strong defines a “prophet” as a foreteller, which is based on the composition of the Greek word. Telling the future before it happens is only a small part of what a prophet does. According to Thayer, a prophet interprets oracles, or other hidden things, and he speaks by divine inspiration. The Hebrew word for prophet (h5030) is derived from h5012: to speak by divine inspiration.

Here is Jesus testimony, which can be applied today as well: Matthew 13:53-58: 53. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. 54. And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55. Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56. And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? 57. And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house. 58. And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. Notice, their focus was on the messenger. In another place the people focused on his education: John 7:15: And the Jews marveled, saying, How knows this man letters, having never learned? How does this man know these things not having been taught in Jewish religious schools? Jesus’ wisdom was from above and his work given him by his Father (John 12:49-50; 14:10; 5:36; 9:4; 10:32), and not man.

Friends of Jesus thought that he was mad (Mark 3:21; John 10:20), and the Jews accused him of all kinds of things. Paul too, was said to be mad (Acts 26:24). It will be no different today when a person shares the truth with others. The majority seldom listens to the minority, and God’s people are always in the minority.

John 4:45-48: 45. Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast (John 2:13): for they also went unto the feast. 46. So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine (John 2:9). And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. 48. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

The people of Cana no doubt had heard about, if not actually witnessed, the turning of water to wine. Those who attended the Passover saw or heard about Jesus driving out the money changers from the temple. The Jews were always asking for a sign (John 2:18; 1Corinthians 1:22). Even today, many look for something outward in order to validate the messenger, rather than check the impression on their hearts as the Spirit moves. A sign to a Pentecostal of someone who has the Spirit is if they speak in tongues.

A Nobleman: The word is derived from the Greek (basilikos g937) which means kingly, officer or minister of a prince, and used to describe land, apparel (Acts 12:20-21) and the law (James 2:8). This man was actually someone important, a ruler of some kind. What can we learn from this story as an allegory?

Because God has given mankind the gift of choice, we are gods (Psalms 82:6) and kings of the land (Revelation 1:6, between our ears). Thinking metaphorically, our children (thoughts) were dead or dying. Psalms 127:3: Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb (h990) is his reward. The Hebrew word translated womb is the same word translated belly in other places: Proverbs 18:8: The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly (h990). So the fruit of the womb, or belly, has to do with thoughts or words. Proverbs 18:20-21: 20. A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. 21. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

The seventh hour: John 4:49-54: 49. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. 50. Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son lives. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. 51. And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son lives. 52. Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to mend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53. So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son lives: and himself believed, and his whole house. 54. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.

Note, The man plead, or prayed for his son to be healed; Jesus did not have to be present to heal him; and the man believed the words of Jesus and went on his way. The story represents anyone’s spiritual healing. Note these verses: Matthew 9:
2. ...they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer [have courage]; thy sins (be) forgiven (g863) thee. (Note: The word forgiven, in today’s thinking, implies debt - i.e. we have a sin debt that we can pay at the end, or we can confess our sin now and the debt is forgiven. The verb forgiven is in the Greek perfect, indicative, passive: The “perfect” tense describes a process that took place in the past, the results of which have continued to the present; The “indicative” mood asserts the fact and is the only mood in which distinctions of time can regularly be made when an action occurs; the “passive” voice indicates the subject as receiving the action. In other words, the man’s sins were dismissed (g863) long before he came to Jesus, which fits perfectly with the fact that God does not keep a record of our sins).
22. ...Daughter, be of good comfort [have courage]; thy faith [understanding] hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
28. ...Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. (results of believing is faith)
29. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith (understanding) be it unto you.
30. And their eyes were opened...

Since God is not keeping a record of our sins, there is no debt to be forgiven. We do, however, need the understanding to send away, or blot out our sins from our way of thinking. The number seven represents “a fullness.” Faith, the result of believing; it is the spiritual understanding given each person who asks. When we reach a full understanding of a specific area of sin in our lives, we will be healed.

Those who received the talents and multiplied them, were told: Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (Matthew 25:21). We are to search (Proverbs 25:2) and continually multiply our talents. Amen.
